Unit 9. Motivation

MotivationMotivation is the thoughts and feelings we have which make us want to do something. Because language learning is not an easy task for most of us, we need motivation to get to our goals. A correctly motivate learner is a successful one.

The comic strip above talks about intrinsic motivation. Actually, we can distinguish two classes of motivation: Intrinsic and extrinsic.

Reflect on this:

Why were you motivated to learn English?

Now read this article.

Do you agree with the suggestions for motivating learners?

Now watch this. Do you agree with him? Did he give you new ideas?

When a teacher gives his student a story about skateboarding because he knows many of them like it, are you motivating them in that way?

What about encouraging them to meet some first language speakers of English? is it doable in our Paraguayan context? how much does it cost?

Let’s reflect on our own learning, not only of English, but of anything. Do you remember your school classes? Can you think of a teacher who really motivated you to learn? can you think on the boring ones? what did they do (or not do) to demotivate you?

Key terms: goal-learner autonomy-self-confidence-target language culture

How much are you learning with this specific format? The idea is to MOTIVATE you learn in different ways. The Anglo blended classes are being designed specifically to meet your needs. Do write your feedback as to tailor the classes for you all!
